FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) - The Catholic Church has released so-called guidelines on certain hot button issues to remind those who practice that they have a moral obligation to vote.

"The Bishops want people to be aware as voters, that they need to vote their conscience," said Tom McDonald with the Diocese of Toledo.

Every four years, Catholic bishops from the United States release "Faithful Citizenship" or social teachings of the Catholic Church that represent the stance of the church on social issues.

"Not just the Catholic church, but a number of faith traditions have an obligation to bring their values and the values of the Gospel to bear upon the issues of the day, to bear upon critical issues of importance to people," said McDonald.

The four main issues the church touched upon in Findlay Thursday night were economy, healthcare, the environment and abortion. Issues where the guidelines could help torn voters.??

"There are guidelines that the church has set out, at least the Catholic Church about those issues and is calling on their membership to seriously consider the position of the church on those issues," said McDonald.

So what about the "Separation of Church and State"?

"No faith traditions, Catholic or else should really be mandating that their membership be voting for a particular candidate or for a particular issue. But rather, we maintain our separation by saying, 'We're just bringing our moral values to bear on the issues and you the voter are, you have to decide as a person of conscience what your decision is going to be in the voting booth ultimately," said McDonald.

A similar seminar to the one held in Findlay will take place in Toledo on October 8 at St. Francis de Sales High School.??

Spanish PM pushes ECB bond buying program

BERLIN (AP) ? Spain's prime minister is urging the European Central Bank to go ahead with a bond-buying program aimed at lowering the borrowing costs of debt-ridden governments like his own, saying in comments published Sunday that eurozone state financing rates need to be similar for the currency union to function.

The ECB holds a meeting Sept. 6 where plans to intervene in bond markets will be discussed, and bank head Mario Draghi has suggested that he was prepared to take "exceptional measures" to restore stability to the 17-nation eurozone.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy told Bild newspaper in an interview published Sunday that Draghi's suggestion that the ECB could help indebted governments lower their borrowing costs by buying their bonds shows "a determination to solve the problem."

"A monetary union cannot function when some of its countries finance themselves with negative-interest, while others must raise money with unsustainably high interest rates," Rajoy was quoted as saying.

Troubled eurozone countries like Spain, Italy and Greece have been paying high rates ? with 10-year Spanish bond yields currently at about 6.5 percent ? because bond investors fear they may default. Yet the governments must constantly sell new bonds to pay off old ones that are coming due. High borrowing costs were what pushed indebted countries Greece, Ireland and Portugal to need bailout loans from the other eurozone countries.

On the other hand Germany has been borrowing money at below the inflation rate as investors accept taking a loss to hold the super-safe securities.

"Draghi has pointed out that above all, doubts about the irreversibility of the euro, and not any objective differences in the economic fundamentals of the euro countries, are responsible for this dangerous interest rate differential," Rajoy said. "If we want to preserve the euro, which has brought us greater prosperity, then we must send an unmistakable signal that there will be no going back."

The ECB's plans have sparked a fierce debate in Germany, which is the biggest backer of Europe's financial rescue efforts. The country's national central bank is against the bond-buying idea, along with many academic economists, conservative politicians and voters. They argue that it puts taxpayer money at risk and breaks the European Union treaty provision barring the ECB from directly backing governments.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has indicated she's open to the ECB's plans and has publicly admonished members of her governing coalition to tone down angry remarks about debt-stricken countries such as Greece.

Merkel is scheduled to meet with Rajoy in Madrid on Thursday, the same day the ECB holds its meeting to talk about the bond issue.

Key questions remain about how the ECB purchases would work and how big they might be, but Draghi has said the bank's help would only come if the countries first ask for help from the region's bailout fund and agree to take steps to reduce their deficits and debt levels.

Rajoy said Spain has already demonstrated a willingness to take such measures, and had no problem with Draghi's need for conditions.

"We are also aware of our public finance problems, and that we need to undertake further reforms," he said.

He also said the eurozone should do anything possible to prevent a Greek exit, saying that if the country left it would be a "gigantic blow not only for Greece but for the whole European Union."

"The Greeks and the rest of us must show that Europe is able to solve this problem..." he said. "A withdrawal of Greece would be an indictment of the entire EU."

Kellen Moore will make $390,000 if he sticks with the Lions all season.

EAST LANSING, Mich. ? Kellen Moore, an undrafted free agent from Boise State, beat the odds by making Detroit?s 53-man roster Friday, landing a job as its No. 3 quarterback.

The Lions told him his fate was 50-50 in meetings earlier Friday. He received the news in a text message from quarterbacks coach Todd Downing just before kickoff while attending Boise State?s game.

?Certainly very excited,? Moore said. ?Nice to just know some facts and know that you?ve got that opportunity.?

Friday was the deadline to cut rosters from 75 to 53. It?s still possible the Lions could make a change as they assess the players cut by other teams.

?It?s the NFL, you?re never totally comfortable in that,? Moore said. ?There?s ups and downs throughout the season. That roster is small and there are a lot of dynamics going on.?

Moore is trying to become the first Boise State quarterback to play in an NFL regular-season game ? and achieve his childhood dream of playing professionally. He received far more playing time in the preseason than any other recent Broncos quarterback, appearing in all four games.

Moore was 41-of-78 for 434 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He played his best game Thursday against the Buffalo Bills, when he led the Lions to a touchdown (he scored on a 1-yard run) and three field-goal attempts despite a rash of dropped passes.

?Kellen played great, all preseason,? starting quarterback Matthew Stafford said. ?He?s a smart kid. The guy?s just a winner. He knows how to play the game. He gets in there in practice, and practice doesn?t slow down. He?s up there calling plays. He?s never fumbling stuff around and doing normal rookie stuff.?

Second-year Lions receiver Titus Young knows Moore better than any of the Detroit players. The former Boise State standout topped 1,000 receiving yards in 2009 and 2010 while playing alongside Moore.

He said it was strange to watch Moore as the No. 3 quarterback, but the same qualities that made him a Heisman contender also showed up in camp.

?He makes players around him better,? Young said. ?That?s something you look for in a quarterback, especially in a professional league. ? I still see him having that same personality and that same integrity and approaching the game the same way and not taking any days off and just taking every single day as a learning lesson.

?I sit a couple seats behind him in meetings and I always see him taking notes.?

Moore, a football junkie who grew up in Prosser, Wash., attending his dad?s high school practices and watching coaches? videos he found on the Internet, has tried to enjoy his NFL experience despite the stress.

He spent four months with the Lions, with no guarantees. He lived in a hotel, then with Stafford for a while. His wife, Julie, moved to Michigan, too.

?It?s kind of a unique, fun adventure,? he said. ?Julie and I just kind of roll with it and have fun.?

Moore is renowned for his smarts ? and his Lions coaches have mentioned that, too ? but the NFL offense was still an adjustment. That?s one reason Moore?s play improved from week to week, and why he looked comfortable picking apart the Bills on Thursday.

?It?s just continuing to get comfortable with everything,? he said. ?New offense, new environment, new personnel. You get comfortable with things. When you?re comfortable, the game slows down. You throw with a lot more confidence.?

The NFL offers a much different existence than college. In the NFL, practice lengths aren?t much different but teams meet much more. The Lions worked from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. during camp and worked until dinner this week.

Moore has studied alongside Stafford and backup Shaun Hill, an 11th-year player.

?Certainly it?s a grind,? Moore said. ?At this stage, at this position, if you?re playing in the NFL, that?s your job. That?s what you do all day. I?ve been very fortunate to be with a good group of guys. Matthew and Shaun have been awesome. They?re just fun, good guys to be around. And to learn from (offensive coordinator) Scott Linehan and Todd Downing ? I couldn?t ask for better guys to help me through this process.?

Moore?s job changes now ? from learning the offense to helping the defense prepare for opponents, just like when he was a true freshman in Boise.

?The bottom line, you?re still playing football,? Moore said.

Track coach, 2 men, 1 dog electrocuted in canal

An assistant track and field coach for Idaho State University who tried to save the family dog from an irrigation ditch and two men who went into the canal in an attempt to?rescue her were electrocuted, officials said Friday.

Bingham County officials found the bodies Thursday evening about three miles northwest of Blackfoot in southeastern Idaho, according to NBC station KPVI of?Pocatello.?

Jacquelyn R. Paulson, 31, of Blackfoot, was reported missing about 9:30 p.m.?after she failed to return from a search for the family dog, Bingham County Sheriff's Capt. Mark Crowley said. Paulson had been missing for about?three hours,?according to KPVI.

A?group of neighbors and family members went looking for?Paulson, and police?sent out a reverse 911 call to surrounding residents alerting them about the missing person's report, KPVI reported. The search party expanded to include six deputies and 15 members from a search and rescue team, according to a sheriff's press release.

The search was called off around 10:50 p.m. when the bodies of three victims along with the dog were discovered in an irrigation ditch about 50 yards from the residence, KPVI reported.

Two Blackfoot residents, Michael Lance Hicks, 41, and Preston Keith Tarpley, 49, also died after apparently going?into the water in an attempt to rescue Paulson, according to KPVI.

An irrigation pump in the area had shorted out and was sending an electrical?current through the water, deputies said. Idaho Power, a unit of IdaCorp Inc., shut off the power in the area so rescuers could recover the bodies, according to KPVI.

Paulson was going into her ninth season an assistant track and field coach at Idaho State. She was a two-time NCAA All-American in the heptathlon as a student at ISU and competed in the event in the Olympic Trials in 2004 and 2008,?finishing eighth in 2008, according to the Idaho?State Journal in Pocatello.?She also competed internationally, according to news reports.

"She was the pride of our program," ISU head track and field coach Dave Nielsen said in a statement. "She was like a daughter to me. This is so untimely and tragic that I just don't know what else to say."

FDA Approves New Prostate Cancer Drug

Aug 31 (Reuters) - A novel prostate cancer drug developed by Medivation Inc and Astellas Pharma Inc has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for men whose cancer has spread despite treatment with hormone therapy and chemotherapy, the agency said on Friday.
Approval of the pill, to be sold under the brand name Xtandi, comes three months ahead of the agency's late-November decision deadline and sent shares of Medivation up 7.6 percent.
Wall Street analysts, on average, have forecast Medivation's sales of the drug at $1.2 billion by 2017, according to Thomson Pharma.
Xtandi, or enzalutamide, is one of a new class of drugs known as androgen inhibitors, designed to interfere with the ability of testosterone to bind to prostate cancer cells. Testosterone is the male hormone that fuels prostate cancer cell growth.
Medivation said it would begin selling the drug in the United States in mid-September at a wholesale price of $7,450 for a 30-day supply. Trial patients, on average, used the drug for eight months, the company said.
Medivation and Astellas, which have also filed for European approval, reported in November that a pivotal study of the drug had been stopped early after it became clear that it improved median overall survival by 4.8 months compared with a placebo.
The pill is also being tested in men with earlier stage prostate cancer, but Medivation has not said when those results are expected.
"The real opportunity for Xtandi is in pre-chemotherapy," Sanford Bernstein analyst Geoffrey Porges said in a research note.
He estimated that 18,000 to 20,000 U.S. prostate cancer patients receive chemotherapy every year and 4,000 to 5,000 eventually progress to other treatments.
"I am confident that this is only the beginning of success stories with this agent and that it will be used in earlier stages of prostate cancer in the near future," Dr. E. David Crawford, head of the urologic oncology department at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and chairman of the Prostate Conditions Education Council, said in a statement.
The FDA last year approved Johnson & Johnson's Zytiga, which is designed to work inside cancer cells to block testosterone production.
"The need for additional treatment options for advanced prostate cancer continues to be important for patients," Richard Pazdur, director of hematology and oncology products at the FDA's drug evaluation and research center, said in a statement. "Xtandi is the latest treatment for this disease to demonstrate its ability to extend a patient's life."
Xtandi "should have comparable or higher sales than Zytiga because it appears to have superior efficacy and had no serious adverse events in clinical trials," said ThinkEquity analyst Kimberly Lee.
Zytiga's worldwide sales rose about $32 million to $232 million in the second quarter from the first quarter.
Prostate cancer kills about 250,000 men a year globally and is the second most common cause of cancer death in men in the United States, after lung cancer.
The most common side effects seen with Xtandi were weakness, fatigue and back pain. The FDA said seizures occurred in about 1 percent of patients and they were taken off the therapy.
The FDA required that Medivation conduct a post-marketing study to further determine the seizure risk of Xtandi.
Medivation said the FDA approval and European regulatory filing trigger milestone payments from Astellas of $35 million, 10 percent of which it is obligated to pay to the University of California, Los Angeles under a licensing agreement.
Shares of Medivation gained $7.44, or 7.6 percent, to $104.86 on Nasdaq.
Shares of Japan-based Astellas closed down less than a percentage point at 3,820 yen in Tokyo, ahead of the announcement. (Additional reporting by Ransdell Pierson and Michele Gershberg; Editing by Leslie Gevirtz, Tim Dobbyn and Dan Grebler)
